FEMA offers tips for Hurricane Irene

As Jersey City officials began making plans for the expected onset of Hurricane Irene this weekend, the federal government issued tips for preparing for potential flooding and power outages.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency suggests that residents prepare a basic emergency supply kit. The kit should include one gallon of water per person each day for at least three days, a three-day supply of non-perishable food, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight with extra batteries, a first aid kit, and a dust mask to filter contaminated air.
Other storm safety tips include: Covering your home windows with plywood, bringing in outdoor furniture, trimming trees and shrubs, turning off propane tanks, installing a generator, reinforcing garage doors, and filling large containers with water for supply purposes.

Barclays golf tournament to return to JC’s Liberty National in 2013

The Barclays, the first leg of golf’s FedEx Cup playoff, will return to the ultra-exclusive Liberty National in Jersey City in 2013, according to published reports. The Barclays was last held at Liberty National in 2009. The course, which sits on the Jersey City waterfront, offers breath-taking views of Manhattan.
The Barclays golf tournament has a rich history, starting life as the Westchester Classic in 1967 at the Westchester Country Club in Rye, N.Y. Various sponsors followed from 1976 until the first Barclays Classic in 2005. Two years later, The Barclays as known today was born when it became the first Playoff event in the FedExCup.
The Barclays also provides financial support to several non-profit organizations and charities.

Summerfest 2011 extended

The heavy rains earlier this month translate to an entertainment bonus for residents who may have missed some of the earlier shows scheduled as part of the city’s annual Summerfest concert series.
Four Summerfest concerts have been rescheduled for later this month and September as a result.
The new dates for the four rained-out shows are: Moonlighters (Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.); 3D (Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.); and Generation of Soul (Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.).
The free Jersey City-sponsored concerts take place in Liberty State Park, in the public gardens just east of the Liberty House Restaurant along Zapp Drive. All concerts are free.
