HOBOKEN AND BEYOND – If you were planning to drink a hurricane during the hurricane this weekend, you may have to make it at home.
In preparation for the arrival of Hurricane Irene, the city of Hoboken announced on Friday night that Police Chief Anthony Falco ordered all licensed alcohol establishments in the city to stop serving alcohol by 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27.
A city release also said that driving of personal vehicles, including taxis, will be prohibited after 8 p.m. on Saturday. Residents are advised to move cars off the street, into garages or to higher ground.
Hoboken can expect rain beginning late Saturday, and full hurricane conditions beginning on Sunday, according to Accuweather.
As noted below, PATH and NJ Transit rail service will also terminate on Saturday at 12 p.m.
On Friday afternoon, Mayor Dawn Zimmer urged residents to leave Hoboken by noon on Saturday, but stopped short of issuing a mandatory evacuation.
She said in a press conference on Friday that the storm could bring some of the worst flooding the city has ever seen. Zimmer also declared a state of emergency in Hoboken, as well as a voluntary evacuation order.
The number for the city’s Emergency Command Center is 201-239-6643/6644 if residents have general questions. The command center is open 24/7. Call 911 for emergencies.
Volunteers interested in helping make calls and volunteer at shelters can come to council chambers (94 Washington St.) starting Saturday at 8 a.m., or e-mail Dan Bryan at DBryan@hobokennj.org. If interested in volunteering, please bring a cell phone and a charger.
