Lemonade stand raised nearly $900 for relief effort
Recently, 7-year-old downtown resident Jordan-River Samuel pitched a lemonade stand outside his parents’ home in Jersey City to raise money famine relief efforts in Somalia. The strategically-placed stand was just two blocks from the Festa Italiana and Samuel was able to catch many residents who were on their way to the big celebration hosted by Holy Rosary Church.
One week later, Samuel and his mom, Felicia Palmer, reported that through his efforts Samuel, with help from his friends, was able to raise nearly $900 through lemonade sales. The money was raised over a three-day period.
“I’d like to thank everyone who helped me, including my friends who worked with me to run the stand, my mom, dad – and God, who gave me sunny days,” Samuel said last week. “To the Somali people, we will fight with you.”
Palmer stressed that all of the proceeds from the sales will be donated to organizations providing food, shelter and medical aid to the Somali people, including So Send You I, a non-profit on the ground in the region.
Hartz sells JSQ office building for $78M
Cushman & Wakefield recently arranged the sale of 2 Journal Square Plaza, a nine-story, 325,000-square-foot class A office building. The building is being sold by Hartz Mountain Industries for $78 million to Gaia Real Estate Investments, in partnership Phoenix Insurance and Menora Mivtachim Insurance, both based in Israel.
Located adjacent to the Journal Square transit hub, 2 Journal Square was built by Hartz in the 1980s and has been leased since then to Broadridge Financial Solutions, a financial services provider. Broadridge’s current lease expires in 2018. The property also includes retail space on the ground level.
In addition to its proximity to transportation, 2 Journal Square includes a four-level parking deck.
Summer Jam library fundraiser set for Sept. 15
The annual fall fundraiser for the Jersey City Free Public Library will take place on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. The event will take place at P.J. Ryan’s, now located at 292 Barrow St. at corner of Mercer Street.
Tickets are $20. Checks should be payable to the City Free Public Library Foundation, Inc. Checks should be sent to Priscilla Gardner, Executive Director, Jersey City Free Public Library Foundation, Inc., 472 Jersey Ave., Jersey City, NJ 07302. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. Refreshments will be served, and are included in the ticket price.
All proceeds will go to the renovation of the Main Library, which was built in 1899.
Summerfest 2011, extended!
The heavy rains earlier this month translate to an entertainment bonus for residents who may have missed some of the earlier shows scheduled as part of the city’s annual concert series.
Four Summerfest concerts have been rescheduled for later this month and September as a result.
The new dates for the four rained-out shows are: NY Exception (Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m.); Monlighters (Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.); 3D (Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.); and Generation of Soul (Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.).
All concerts are free.
