After 10 months, Sinatra Drive North reopens
The portion of Sinatra Drive North in Hoboken that collapsed in October 2010 due to deteriorating road and piling conditions re-opened to traffic on Friday afternoon.
A wild winter and additional construction caused original deadlines of opening the road to be missed.
The construction work was completed by Sparwick Contractors of Lafayette. Langan Engineering of Elmwood Park designed the new road. The work was completed in 10 months at a cost of about $2.8 million utilizing New Jersey Department of Transportation funds, according to a county press release.
“The roadway reconstruction work consisted of essentially an in-kind replacement of the existing deteriorated wood bulkhead, piles and collapsed relieving platform with new steel piles, reinforced concrete pile caps and a pre-cast concrete beam deck,” according to the release.
Lua Restaurant, located near 14th Street and Sinatra Drive North, was shut down by the city due to concerns stemming from the construction. The website for the restaurant was down, and the phone number was still disconnected as of Friday.
Applied Companies, the company that owns the Shipyard building near the road collapse site, will initiate their promenade repair work and will keep the promenade walkway closed until the work is completed, according to the county release.
Hoboken police find dead body on Bloomfield Street
The Hoboken Police Department Detective Bureau confirmed last week that a dead body was found in an apartment located on the 50 block of Bloomfield St. in Hoboken on Tuesday morning.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is now investigating the case. A call to the HCPO was not returned by press time.
A report on a local website states that no foul play is suspected in the death.
Symphony Orchestra concert to be held Aug. 18 in Pier A Park
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, directed by Jacques Lacombe and conducted by Neeme Jarvi, will hold a free outdoor concert on Aug. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Hoboken’s Pier A Park.
The event is presented by the city of Hoboken, Mayor Dawn Zimmer, The Applied Companies, and Burgiss Group.
The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, now in its 88th season, comprises some of the country’s finest musicians. The Orchestra provides more than 250 performances each year, bringing music to more than 150,000 people annually.
Ramos also opposes proposed PATH hike
Assemblyman Ruben J. Ramos Jr. (D-33rd Dist.) has joined “a growing number of local, state, and national leaders” to oppose the recent proposals from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to raise fares for the PATH train and Hudson River crossings.
Ramos wrote a letter to the Port Authority Executive Director Christopher Ward on Aug. 8 urging Ward to “consider the needs of struggling individuals and families before making a final decision about the proposed changes.”
The PATH fare could rise from $1.75 to $2.75 as soon as next month. EZPass fares for bridges and tunnels could rise from $8 to $12 during peak hours, and $6 to $10 during off-peak. They’d both go up another $2 in 2014.
The Port Authority board will vote on the proposal at an Aug. 19 meeting.
