Feral cat program has multiple benefits

Dear Editor:
We were delighted and relieved to read your article about the new program to stabilize feral and stray cat populations in Secaucus (“Trap-Neuter-Return,” in the Aug. 7 issue).
Our own observations and our conversations with Secaucus Animal Shelter personnel confirm that this “TNR” program has been desperately needed. Having worked with cat rescue groups in other locations, we have seen first-hand, over and over, TNR’s multiple benefits for both cats and community.
Our thanks go to Mayor Gonnelli, Councilwoman Susan Pirro, Dr. Hatch, and Kevin Kessler at the shelter for not only recognizing the problem but mobilizing to solve it.
Bridget Gritle’s description of the successful volunteer TNR program at Harmon Cove is inspiring. Surely a well-managed group of volunteers like hers –approved and guided by the Secaucus Animal Shelter –would be a vital component of the town’s new plan.
