Pet tortoise believed stolen from Dennis Collins Park

BAYONNE AND BEYOND — Someone apparently stole a 70-pound dry land tortoise from near a baseball field in Dennis Collins Park in Bayonne on Saturday Aug. 6 while it was feeding on grass.
The owner believes that someone climbed over the fence into the grassy area where the pet tortoise was feeding. The owner is concerned because the animal needs medication.
The 20-year old animal has been owned by one of the baseball coaches for about 10 years. Tortoises generally have life spans comparable with those of human beings, and some individuals are known to have lived longer than 150 years.
A photo of the tortoise will be posted here when it is received.
