Walmart is hiring for Bayonne store

Walmart, which is close to completing its new superstore at Bayonne Crossing, is looking to hire approximately 300 people. The store is slated to open this fall. To facilitate applications, the retailer has opened a temporary hiring center at 151B Lefante Way in Bayonne.
The hiring center began accepting applications on July 18, and will continue accepting applications from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday; and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. Interested applicants can apply online at http://walmartstores.com/Careers. According to Store Manager Adam Gratz, the store will be hiring both full- and part-time associates.
“The entire Bayonne community is anticipating the opening of the local Walmart store. We are grateful for the hundreds of jobs being created for area residents,” said Mayor Mark Smith.
Walmart’s benefit program is available to eligible full- and part-time associates and provides a variety of affordable health and well-being benefits, including medical insurance with no lifetime maximum.
The majority of associates will begin work in September to help prepare the store for its grand opening in the fall.

Porch nearly collapses on East 32nd Street

On Aug. 4 at about 7:30 p. m., the Bayonne Fire Department responded to 35 East 32nd St. on a report of a hazardous condition. Firefighters arrived at a 2.5-story residential dwelling, and witnessed the wooden front porch separated from the building in one corner. Supporting columns were also leaning significantly away from the building, signs of sagging and rot were observed, and the entire porch was pitched precariously – demonstrating signs of potential collapse.
A search of the building was conducted, and was determined to be unoccupied when firefighters arrived. Technical Rescue Personnel cordoned the building and worked for three hours, strategically placing wooden support shoring under the porch to prevent collapse.
Specially trained Bayonne UASI Strike Team members and truck members worked together to devise and implement the shoring plan. A city engineer and a Building Department representative were at the scene to confer with rescue workers. Two occupants (one on each floor) reportedly reside in the building, and have been displaced due to the hazard. The Building Department will conduct follow-up measures. Fire Department crews left the scene around midnight.
“It is very fortunate that this hazard was discovered before it was too late. Should this porch have collapsed, it could have caused a great deal of harm,” said Fire Chief Greg Rogers.
Bayonne Police, EMS, the Building Dept., City Engineer, Red Cross, and the Fire Canteen were at the scene to assist.
