WADDLETON, GEORGE J

A mass of Christian burial was offered Aug. 3 at St. Joseph’s Church for George J. Waddleton, 77, of Jersey City. He passed away at the Atrium at Hamilton Park on July 30 after a long illness. An outstanding multisport student athlete at St. Peter’s Prep (‘53) and Holy Cross College (‘57), George was a member of St. Peter’s Hall of Fame (where his number is retired) Holy Cross Hall of Fame and Hudson County Hall of Fame. In 1952 the Newark Star Ledger declared George runner up to future Olympic Decathelon Medalist Milt Campbell as the best athlete in the State of New Jersey. He served as a Captain in the Marine Corps after which he settled in the Boston area where he became Fleet Manager of the Oldsmobile Div. of General Motors in New England. He was predeceased by his wife Ann Leigh Waddleton and siblings Richard, Mary Ann Jencarelli, Rose Mc Quillian and Kathleen Cook. George is survived by his sons Richard of Long Beach, Ca. and Philip of Fountain Valley, Ca. as well as his brother Daniel and sisters Sarah Murray, June Tuohy and Bernadette Stoebling. Services arranged by the McLaughlin Funeral Home, Jersey City.
