BAYONNE BRIEFS

Summer camp for performance puts on show

Brendan Wahlers, who took over as acting instructor at Bayonne High School last year, said the idea behind the “One Singular Sensation” end of the season show is to let kids be kids.
He said instead of having kids perform songs that were created for adults on Broadway, the show gives them songs that are more age appropriate.
The event is being put on by the Bayonne High School Summer Theater Camp, which is open to students from all schools in Bayonne from ages 7 to 18, Wahlers said.
The camp differs in a lot of ways from other student productions in the fact that these kids have aspirations to get into some aspect of theater, Wahlers said.
“This could be drama, music, or dance,” he said. “Everybody studies all three.”
The show has seasoned professionals on staff, such as Laura Bassett, who serves as vocal teacher; Meg Zervoulis, who is in charge of music; and Lori Young, who has performed in a number of Broadway shows.
Tickets cost $12 for students and senior citizens, or $15 for general admission. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (201) 858-0071.

Gearing up for a hunger walk

Even though the Bayonne CROP Hunger Walk won’t take place until Oct. 23, people from Bayonne’s faith and civic communities are getting ready now by sponsoring the event, which will start and end at Our Lady of the Assumption Church at 93 W. 23rd Street.
The Bayonne CROP Hunger Walk Committee has set a goal of 250 walkers to help raise money and awareness to fight hunger in the local community and around the world through self help initiatives. Of the total amount raised, 25 percent will go to local food pantries and programs such as the Saturday Cluster Soup Kitchen at the Assumption Church and local programs through the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation.
This year, Bayonne will join more than 2,000 cities and towns nationwide who are joining together within their interfaith community, with the theme “Ending hunger one step at a time.”
Many of the walkers will be wearing t-shirts that proclaim their solidarity with those around the world, as well as with the people served by the food pantries.
CROP Hunger Walks have been particularly effective in places like Haiti and earthquake stricken areas, helping people to rebuild homes, providing them with food supplies, and other necessities. CROP Walks have also helped in areas throughout the U.S. ravaged by floods and tornadoes.
For more information about the walk, contact Dr. Sara Gil-Ramos, coordinator, at (201) 858-0748, or Dorothy Perez at (201) 339-2624.

Dinner with Diana

American Legion Riders of Post 19 will be sponsoring a fundraising event, called Dinner with Diane. All proceeds will be donated to The Cancer Institute in Philadelphia, Pa.
Diane Gaunya had many passions in life – her family and friends; her dedication to Post 19, where she was a unit member for many years; and her endless work with the troops and the Bayonne community.
“Diane was a fighter, beating cancer several times, only to be taken from us suddenly several months ago from an unrelated medical problem,” said Roberta Buchanan. “We are holding the fundraiser in Diane’s name so that other cancer patients can benefit from the treatments and healing at The Cancer Institute in Philadelphia, Pa., a treatment center that Diane held very close to her heart. We welcome and thank anyone that can attend to help us honor Diane and help others.”
The event will be held at American Legion Post 19, 683 Broadway, on Aug. 6 from 5 to 10 p.m. Tickets cost $25.
For tickets or questions, call Will Chwalyk at (201) 736-1363 or Frank Cangiano at (718) 447-4146.
