HUDSON COUNTY – Assemblyman Ruben J. Ramos Jr. (D – 33rd Dist.), of Hoboken, is not happy about the potential closures of United States Post Offices throughout his Hudson County district.
Ramos sent a letter to the postmaster general, Patrick Donahoe, in Washington, D.C. on July 27.
Ramos wrote in the letter that he understands the need to potentially close offices for financial reasons, but asked him to reconsider what the impact would be if the post offices were closed in his district.
“Many cities, including Hoboken, Union City, and North Bergen, are currently slated to lose many of their offices,” Ramos wrote in his letter. “Not only will this reduction prove to be unmanageable for the people of Hudson County, but also for those post offices which remain open. These remaining facilities will not be able to efficiently and effectively handle the exponential increase in business resulting from the impending closures.”
Ramos said the closures in the 33rd District are “too draconian.”
This week, the United States Postal Service published a list of offices that could be affected by a study to downsize or close over 3,000 offices across the country as a cost saving measure.
