Officials: Stay out of the Hudson River!

HUDSON COUNTY – Looking to cool off in the Hudson River? You shouldn’t, it’s just as crappy in there.
A fire on Wednesday in a New York City wastewater treatment plant across from Edgewater on the Hudson River caused a shutdown of the facility, and since Wednesday there has been a continuing discharge of raw sewage into the river, according to a release from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protections (DEP) on Thursday.
The DEP is conducting scientific modeling to determine whether or not any New Jersey land is impacted by the sewage.
For now, officials are “strongly recommending that individuals refrain from swimming, kayaking, and other recreational uses of the Hudson until the situation is resolved.”
Fishers and crabbers should temporarily avoid consumption of fish and crabs from the river, according to the DEP release. Anglers and crabbers should also avoid contact with the water and clean any gear used in the water, according to the release.
The DEP will provide periodic updates to affected municipalities and health departments. –Ray Smith
