Hoboken hospital CEO Spiros Hatiras resigns

HOBOKEN – Spiros Hatiras resigned from his position as the Chief Executive Officer of the Hoboken University Medical Center at a special meeting of the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority on Thursday night, according to hospital spokesperson Joan Quigley.
The resignation comes while a potential transfer of ownership is underway, as the state Planning Board is prepared to hold a public hearing on July 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Parish Hall, 422 Willow Ave. The public hearing is required before the state can issue a Certificate of Need to the potential new owners, essentially finalizing the deal.
The city of Hoboken hopes to transfer its hospital from being municipally run to being owned by a company called HUMC Holdco that shares common ownership with Bayonne Medical Center.
The deal is worth $91.7 million, and approximately $52 million would be used to extinguish the city’s bond guarantee after the council voted to rescue the sinking hospital in 2007.
The interim CEO will be Vincent Riccitelli, the hospital’s chief financial officer, Quigley said on Friday morning. — Ray Smith
