Local campaign finance ordinance may restrict contributions from developers
Secaucus Councilman Gary Jeffas is working on revising the town’s pay-to-play ordinance, which limits the contribution level from business entities and individuals that conduct business with the town of Secaucus.
Towns all over New Jersey have adopted and revised “pay to play” ordinances over the last few years in an effort to cut down on the appearance of impropriety regarding local campaign donations. Some believe that vendors must “pay to play,” or donate to a campaign in order to get government contracts. The ordinances attempt to limit the practice.
The town seeks to expand the ordinance to include developers and to limit contributions to zero or $300. The town expects to take official action on the measure in September, said Mayor Michael Gonnelli.
