Who wrote the Star-Spangled Banner? Where? During which war? Answering this type of trivia question was just one of many activities that kept Secaucus residents entertained during the town’s annual Independence Day celebration, which drew an estimated 1,500 people to the Secaucus Swim Center on Friday, July 1.

“The weather is always good. Food is always plentiful. Just fabulous,” said Angie Grossi, 68, about the town celebration. She has lived in Secaucus since 1976 and said, “It’s a great town.”
Seven-year-old Madelyn Sheffey jumped on the bungee trampoline as her parents watched on offering encouragement. Her family moved to Secaucus just two weeks ago. “This is an excellent event,” said parent George Sheffey, 48.
After climbing the rock wall, Iqra Ahmad, 13, described how she loves “all the colors” in the fireworks display.
The Constantino brothers, Anthony and Dean, shared a similar appreciation for the fireworks, saying, “It’s all bright and they make really loud noises!”
For head lifeguards, Dana Damato and Shauna Genatt, who both return every summer to work at the Swim Center, they enjoyed seeing everyone from town come together.
“It’s awesome to get everybody out, get all the families out. We always end up with great weather,” said Mayor Michael Gonnelli.
With free food, ice cream, cotton candy, snow cones, swimming, music, and kids attractions, its’ no surprise that residents return with their families and friends time and time again for a night that culminates in a lit up sky over Secaucus.
