‘Together we can make a difference!’

To the Editor:
Two weeks ago, my beloved dog, Plato, passed away after ingesting rat poison during one of our daily walks in our Bayonne neighborhood. Since then, I have heard from others in the community that several other dogs and cats in town have also succumbed to rat poisoning, and that some cruel homeowners in Bayonne are putting poison on their front lawns in an effort to keep away stray cats and other animals.
In addition to the danger this poses to animals, this is also a hazard to all residents of Bayonne, as the poison is washed away by the rain and can contaminate our water supply. Children are also not safe from the poison, as they can come into contact with the contaminated lawns when walking or playing nearby.
The police department says they can’t do anything unless someone reports a specific homeowner. However, there are things they can do: 1) Make Bayonne residents aware this is happening, not only for the safety of our pets, but also for that of our children; 2) Educate homeowners that this is not a viable solution and poses a public health hazard; 3) Require homeowners to put signs on lawns that have poison, similar to what they require for pesticide.
Residents can also take action: 1) Call City Hall and let them know this is unacceptable. It’s their job to keep us safe! 2) If you see someone putting a poisonous substance in a public area, speak up! Call the police and report them.
It’s up to all of us, as a community, to keep each other safe. Together we can make a difference!
