WEST NEW YORK — The West New York Board of Education met Thursday night and considered several changes in the district.
During the public forum of the meeting Marie Romano, representing the WNY Education Association asked, if non-tenured teachers were going to be rehired. Board of Education President Cosmo Cirillo responded that the rehiring of 179 teachers was part of the order of business in the meeting. Romano was thrilled to hear that 179 teachers were going to be rehired, but was still waiting to hear which aides, substitutes, and teachers were being rehired. Dozens of teachers were given layoff notices last month for budgetary reasons.
An ordinance issued by the new commissioners of West New York adding two more members on the Board of Education was not enforced during the meeting because the board lawyer requires further research about the legality. Current laws require the two members take posts legally mid-year in 2012. Janet Passante was elected as the new vice president of the West New York Board of Education.
