Political favors

Dear Editor:
With each passing day, it becomes increasingly clear that the Hoboken Board of Education operates on a system of favors rather than merit when it comes to their actions and appointments. The list of favors grows larger every day and I wouldn’t expect it to change anytime soon. Favors are the only explanation for some of the moves (or lack there of) that the Hoboken Board of Education has recently made. But nobody seems to notice; or perhaps, nobody seems to care. Maybe certain people within the school system are afraid to speak their mind for fear of retribution.
I am very close with many teachers who work in the Hoboken school system. A significant number of them have told me that they are afraid to voice their opinion, citing others who have done so before them and have been punished by the Board for speaking their mind. What kind of world do we live in when a teacher who has been in the school system but one year, and is very young, gets appointed to be a varsity coach over another teacher who has been in the same system for many more years and has coached JV? For the record, both of these men applied. Where does hard work and merit come into this equation? Does this seem fair to you? There is no justification here, just like there is no justification for keeping football coaches employed who give their out-of-town players phony Hoboken addresses. Isn’t it funny when players from the Hoboken High Football team have the same addresses as some of their coaches? Can you say “red flag”? Or how about the time when 2 HHS assistant coaches got into a fist fight on the sideline during a playoff game in front of the entire team and the crowd (which included a Board of Education member) in New Providence last year? All of these men are still employed, all of these men are still great friends with certain members of the Hoboken Board of Education…. What a wonderful world this is, where it’s all about “Kids First”.
