Layoff notices sent out in West New York

WEST NEW YORK — According to news sources, a $5 million deficit has led to the Board of Education sending layoff notices to 50 non-tenured teachers. In addition, as early as June, two middle and two high school counselors were sent notices they would not return to their post. Three of the four will return as teachers, since the fourth worker is not certified to teach, said West New York Superintendent John Fauta in a newspaper story.
Fauta anticipates the district will receive an estimated $14 million in additional state funding. He also anticipates people will be brought back once the district gets the state funding, according to the story.
