HUDSON COUNTY — Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Tamara Reyes, 37, of Jefferson Street in Weehawken is facing charges related to the alleged abandonment of her injured child near Weehawken High School on June 10.
On Wednesday, DeFazio said the baby was not found on the steps of Weehawken High School as initially reported but rather face down on a sidewalk near the curb in front of the high school.
The baby remains hospitalized for the injuries sustained that DeFazio said may have occured from being tossed from a vehicle — but the investigation is ongoing.
“It’s been ascertained that the injuries were due to blunt force trauma,” DeFazio said.
Investigators have thus far found no indication of long-term abuse and at this point they say the injuries appear to be recently inflicted.
DeFazio said that Reyes appeared in Central Judicial Processing Court on Wednesday and is currently in custody at the Hudson County Correctional Center.
The most serious charge that Reyes faces is aggravated assualt, a second degree crime that could lead to a maximum of 10 years in state prison, at least 85 percent of which would have to be served.
She is also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse.
The baby and Reyes’ other underage child are currently in the custody of the Division of Youth and Family Services. She also has another child who is 19 years old.
Reyes is a special education teacher in West New York and has been on leave since April.
