Dear Editor:
On April 8, members of Congress sent a letter asking the IRS to investigate AARP to see if they deserve a tax-exempt status. The letter states that AARP is taking public money and benefits it gets from not having to pay taxes to take partisan positions on issues.
And we aren’t talking chump-change. AARP receives millions from taxpayers every year. They got $18 million in stimulus funding and over $300 million in grants paid for by tax payers between 2008 and 2010.
While they were receiving all this free money, AARP is also making a ton of money. The letter from Congress stated that in 2009, AARP made $1.4 billion in revenues. And in 2009, their CEO made $1.9 million dollars. That’s a pretty big haul for someone running a “non-profit”.
And now AARP is using its cash to lobby against reform of decades old telephone regulations in NJ. As a senior and a taxpayer, I want a refund.
Sincerely,
George Cameron
