Former Union City resident appointed U.S. District Court Judge in N.J.

UNION CITY — Former Union City resident Esther Salas is the first Hispanic woman appointed U.S. District Court Judge in N.J.
Esther Salas is a current federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey in Newark. On June 14 the United States Senate confirmed Salas’ judgeship on the U.S District Court for New Jersey. Salas was nominated to the judgeship by President Barack Obama on Dec. 1, 2010 on the recommendation of Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez.
Salas is taking the post of Katherine Sweeney Hayden who is retiring after serving that U.S. District Court of NJ in Newark since 2007.
