BAYONNE AND BEYOND — Emergency personnel responded to a pier owned by CoGen Technologies Inc. Wednesday evening on the report of an explosion and fire. The pier juts into New York Harbor. The facility apparently handles gas and other chemicals and people have been warned to remain clear of the fire scene.
Officials say the cause appeared to be electrical in nature.
A report in a local newspaper said that the Bayonne Bridge and Route 440 near the explosion were temporarily shut down.
