Dear Editor:
I’ve been sick and tired of the noise in my area of the 1st Ward. Every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and early am hours, my neighbors and I on Hudson and River Street are often times awakened by drunk hooligans who yell, scream – most of who are from out of town – and have no regard for Hoboken residents.
I’m disappointed in the lack of attention this issue – probably the most important in my area – has gotten from our Council representative, Terry Castellano. I got a campaign mailer from her mentioning she’s taking steps to address the problem, but where are the results? This issue continues to get worse, with no relief in sight.
I read recently that the Councilwoman introduced a resolution increasing the fines for those individuals making excessive noise and causing a disturbance. Well, I’ve walked the streets at 1 and 2 in the morning, and let me tell you – it won’t help. Bars need to do a better job of controlling their patrons in line, and cops need to be on the streets, not in their cars during these high peak times. If cops aren’t giving tickets to these drunk hooligans, what is the point in increasing the fines? These should be the issues the Councilwoman should focus on.
I’m frustrated that this hasn’t been addressed in the past several years by our Councilwoman. Maybe if she lived in my building, she would do something about it.
Sincerely,
Ben Barnes
