Secaucus runs for the vets

Hundreds raise money for service men and women during 5K run

The weather wasn’t willing, but the spirit was.
Despite a miserable and rainy start, Secaucus’ inaugural Run for the Warriors, a fundraiser for U.S. military veterans of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, drew more than 200 people to Harmon Meadow for the 5K run.
“We know that 117 people ran, and 40 people walked,” said Casey O’Donnell, coordinator of Run for the Warriors. “There were a number of people who registered the day of [the event]. But since those registrations are done manually we don’t have any totals on how many people registered in person.”
O’Donnell admitted the wet weather kept some sneakers at home, but, she added, “it wasn’t bad considering the weather and the fact that this was an inaugural event.”
Last week, run organizers still didn’t have a finally tally on how much was raised. Prior to the run O’Donnell said she’d like to see the town raise about $60,000.
Walkers and runners paid a $25 registration fee, which was $30 the day of the event. In addition, Hartz Mountain Industries and other local companies have made corporate donations of 2,500 and $5,000.
Money raised for the event goes towards service men and women who have been injured in the line of duty while serving in the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
