Dear Editor:
As a 24 year resident of Hoboken I believe the parking situation is as good as it has been since I have lived here. Public garages and residential stickers have truly made a difference. That being said, there could be ways to make it better. I became a motorcyclist 3 years ago and have become acutely aware of the problems of parking a motorcycle or scooter in Hoboken. Two-wheelers increase parking area for larger vehicles and I believe should have some designated spaces. Many of my bike riding neighbors agree with me. We trade knock-over stories. If I knew my motorcycle wouldn’t be tapped into and/or knocked over (as it had often been before I rented an out of town garage). I would get rid of my car, park my bike here, and use Zip-Car. There is already in place a new program to try a two-wheeler parking project. Recently, plastic pylons have been put up on many corners in town to increase intersection sight lines. Allowing two-wheelers to park between the pylons would be smart for two reasons- a safe place for two-wheelers to park without blocking intersection sight lines since most two-wheelers are waist-high, and letting 2-wheelers know that there is a safe place to park, encouraging smaller, more fuel efficient vehicle use.
