Police chase in downtown Hoboken
A 47-year-old Newark man was caught red-handed while allegedly trying to steal a vehicle downtown, according to police.
Charles Beavers, 47, was arrested at approximately 7:30 a.m. on May 18 near Observer Highway and Park Avenue after a resident walked out of his apartment and noticed Beavers allegedly sitting inside his car, according to police.
The victim told Beavers to get out of the car and said he was calling police, according to a police report. Beavers then allegedly tried to drive away with the car, police said. The police garage is very close to the scene, allowing police to respond quickly.
When police arrived on the scene, the 1990 Dodge Ram Charger was crashed against a guardrail on Observer Highway with damage to the car.
Beavers allegedly tried to flee the scene on foot after the car crash, but police caught up to him about a block away, police said.
After allegedly attempting to “head butt” an officer, cops were able to subdue and arrest him. A search of Beavers revealed he allegedly had screwdrivers, a 9-inch folding knife, and a pair of gloves, according to police.
Beavers was arrested on 10 charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools, criminal mischief, and driving while having his license suspended, according to police.
Early morning assault on Seventh and Park
A 24-year-old Hoboken resident was allegedly assaulted by two or three males on Sunday, May 15, at approximately 4:30 a.m. in the area of Seventh Street and Park Avenue, according to police.
Police were called on the report of an assault. They met with a man who said he had just been attacked by two or three “light-skinned Caucasian or Hispanic males.” Due to the rain and quickness of the attack, he was unable to provide police with a more detailed description.
Police said the man’s nose appeared to be broken, and he had cuts and bruises, as well as blood all over his face and shirt.
The victim said that while returning home, he walked past a double-parked car that had people standing around it. One of them allegedly grabbed the victim and held him in a chokehold while another punched him in the face and took his wallet containing cash, credit cards, and a driver’s license. They also took his Bose headphones from his back pocket, according to police. The attackers drove away from the scene.
The Hoboken Volunteer Ambulance Corp. treated the victim for the injuries.
Wild Sunday night on the town
Two Jersey City men were arrested on Monday, May 16 at approximately 1 a.m. after allegedly starting a fight on Washington Street then allegedly driving away while intoxicated, according to police.
Michael Romero, 43, of Jersey City, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and hindering apprehension, and Robert Romero, 24, of Jersey City, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, according to police.
Police were called to the 500 block of Washington Street on the report of a fight. A 28-year-old New York City resident alleged that two males who drove away in a Mercedes truck assaulted him, according to police.
Police sent out a description of two males: one wearing a tan jacket and another with a red baseball cap. After the description was broadcast, police stopped a black Mercedes about three blocks away.
Police say a witness saw one male get out of the car and take off a red hat and his shirt, and the driver was wearing a tan jacket, according to police. Police say Michael Romero, the driver of the Mercedes, allegedly refused to give information and also had a heavy odor of alcohol on his breath.
Police later stopped the shirtless male a block away. He was later identified as Robert Romero.
The victim identified both men as the ones allegedly involved in the attack, according to police.
The victim stated that Robert allegedly knocked down, kicked, and punched the victim in his stomach while the victim was defenseless on the sidewalk, according to police.
Cigarettes cause problem
A 41-year-old store clerk was assaulted on Friday, May 13, at approximately 4:10 p.m. after he had refused to sell cigarettes to a man at approximately 1:10 a.m. that same day, according to a police report.
The clerk knew the alleged attacker as “Alex,” and said the man came into the store on Friday morning trying to buy a pack of cigarettes. However, the store clerk said he was closing and didn’t sell the pack to the man, according to police.
The man known as “Alex” then returned to buy cigarettes, and the two revisited the issue of the night before, according to a police report. The conversation got heated, and “Alex” allegedly jumped over the counter, allegedly grabbing the man and ripping his shirt. The clerk was also allegedly hit in the head with a closed fist. Police say the man allegedly told the clerk, “I’m gonna get you; I know where you live,” according to police.
Police are investigating.
Facebook fight
A 37-year-old woman from Jersey City was assaulted outside of JFK Field at Hoboken High School on May 13 at 5:50 p.m., according to police. The victim said she was hit in the face after an argument became heated.
The victim said she previously told the alleged assailant that she would report her to police if she didn’t leave her alone. The victim also said that the suspect had sent Facebook messages to her daughter about her, according to police.
The victim had scratches and cuts on her face, police said.
The alleged assailant had already left the scene when cops arrived. The incident is under investigation.
