Memorial Day Parade scheduled for Wednesday night

On Wednesday, May 25, at 6:30 p.m., Hoboken will hold its annual Memorial Day Parade, honoring veterans.
The parade will start at City Hall and will head up Washington Street, ending at the Elks Club. Former State Sen. Bernard Kenny, who is also a Navy veteran, will be the grand marshal of the parade.

Hoboken Terminal redevelopment plan meeting on May 31

On Tuesday, May 31, the city plans to hold a community meeting about redevelopment near the Hoboken Terminal and Rail Yards property. The meeting is at the Rue School Auditorium, 301 Garden St., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
There are two phases in the redevelopment plan.
Phase I of the redevelopment plan will be prepared first, focusing on the 1.8-acre portion along Hudson Place – One Hudson Place. The plan for Phase 2 of the plan will include the remaining portion of the 52-acre Hoboken Terminal and Yards.
The May 31 meeting invites residents to participate in a conversation about Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the redevelopment plan.

Baby parade scheduled for May 22

The Hoboken baby parade was rescheduled for Sunday, May 22, with registration from 12 p.m. to 12:30. The parade begins at 1 p.m.
The parade begins at Sinatra Park, located at Fifth Street and the Hudson River, and proceeds along the waterfront to Pier A Park. Volunteers are needed. Email volunteer@hobokenmuseum.org.
Trophies are awarded for Best Dressed Child, Most Creative Carriage, and Best Dressed Family. That last category has been awarded to twins and triplets, families with multiple children, cousins, and even playgroups.

City to hold tryouts and registration for youth sports

Hoboken Cheer Dynamics All Stars (ages 5-18) will host tryouts on Monday, June 13, and Tuesday, June 14, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Multi Service Center, 124 Grand St.
The Hoboken Travel Soccer team will also hold tryouts for the 2011-2012 season.
From Monday, May 23 to Friday, June 3, all new interested boys and girls born between Aug. 1, 1997 and July 31, 2004 should register by emailing recreation@hoboken.org, providing the child’s date of birth. Interest players will be contacted as to the exact date and time of the tryout.
The Hoboken Recreation Soccer program will open registration for the fall 2011 season on May 23, and it will remain open until Aug. 1.
Returning coachers, new coaches, parent representatives, league volunteers and anyone interested in those positions should register online.

The following are registration requirements from the city:
“After registering your child on-line you will need to provide the following information:
1. A copy of your child’s birth certificate.
2. Three proofs of residency are required:
(i.e. utility, telephone, or cable bill, drivers license).
This information is required for all leagues.
For participants that have submitted birth certificates and proof of residency for any other sporting program this information is not required.”

Armstead Johnson named new executive director of The Jubilee Center

The Jubilee Center announced last week that Armstead Johnson, who previously worked at the West Orange Community House and Boys and Girls Club, is the next executive director of The Jubilee Center.
The Jubilee Center’s mission is “To equip children from [the] city’s public housing neighborhood with the tools, not only to survive, but to overcome the many barriers they face in their young lives,” according to their website.
In West Orange, Johnson was responsible for after school programming, building evening programs for children and adults, and fundraising.
Armstead also was Director of Development for the Newark Boys and Girls Club where he was instrumental in the annual Evening of the Stars, an event which raised nearly $400,000 annually for the Club.
Armstead has a master’s degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University and a degree in Political Science from Howard University.

Local project receives ‘Smart Growth Award’

A project to transform Hoboken’s public housing into a sustainable, transit-oriented, mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood is one of seven projects to be honored with a 2011 Smart Growth Award from New Jersey Future, a nonprofit smart growth research and advocacy group.
The Hoboken Housing Authority Vision 20/20 Plan, which is a collaboration of the HHA and Marchetto Higgins Stieve Architects and Planner, was cited in the category of Comprehensive Neighborhood Redevelopment Strategy.

Hoboken resident to compete on ‘Food Network Star’

Chris Nirschel of Hoboken will compete with 14 other finalists for the chance to have his own show on the Food Network.
The competitive show “Food Network Star” premieres on Sunday, June 5 at 9 p.m. on Food Network. The series airs from June 5 to the season finale on Aug. 14.
Nirschel, 28, “matches his vivacious personality to his culinary style, bring bold and intriguing flavors to the kitchen with no recipes at all,” according to a Food Network bio.
The show is hosted by famed chef Bobby Flay, and will also include appearances by Alton Brown, Courteney Cox, Paula Deen, Guy Fieri, and Rachel Ray, according to a release.
“Chris found his passion and focus in life when he attended French Culinary Institute and most recently served as the sous chef at a New York restaurant,” according to a bio.
