Urban Enterprise Zone program

Dear Editor:
As readers know, there has been uncertainty regarding the future of the Urban Enterprise Zone program in New Jersey. I write to express that I remain supportive of Urban Enterprise Zones as I’ve had the benefit of watching such shopping districts grow. The 3.5 percent sales tax incentivizes consumers from outside of the area to visit our main streets.
While the culture of shopping malls and big box stores continues to grow, it is important to note that UEZs often are comprised of small stores and shops that offer knowledgeable staff and personal attention.
Furthermore, the reduced sales tax offers bargains to residents in UEZ neighborhoods, encouraging local spending and stronger economies, which is critical as we continue to slowly rebound from a national recession.
Also, part of the funds taken in through UEZ businesses can be banked by a municipality and spent on projects that increase local safety, enhance our streetscapes and improve our roads. I understand that all UEZ’s have not been models of success and tightening our belts has become a reality for government, but it is my contention that the Urban Enterprise Program is worth saving. I would certainly endorse another model that would provide the same function while aiming for greater efficiency.

Sincerely,
Brian P. Stack
State Senator
