UC High School to hold book signing this Wednesday
A book signing for “Kids First,” a new book by early childhood education and development expert David Kirp that showcases outstanding educational “game changing” programs in unlikely places, will be held this Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Union City High School.
In the book, Kirp uses Union City’s Hostos Center for Early Education as a preschool model that should be mirrored by facilities across the nation.
“Union City has kept its eye on the ball for years,” he said, explaining that the district’s overall success is what happens when “you put your mind to the job of improving the education of these kids…nudging them into thinking about college and beyond.”
Free Internet safety program offered in UC
On April 10 from 10 a.m. to noon, the Pathfinder Club of Union City will host a free workshop on Internet Safety for youth, ages 9 to 15, and their parents or guardians. The bilingual program will be presented in English and Spanish by an instructor certified on Internet Safety. The workshop will be held at 1908 Kerrigan Ave. in Union City in the Multipurpose Room. WNY to hold Easter festivities Sunday
Mayor Silverio Vega in conjunction with the WNY Recreation Department will be offering an Easter Egg Hunt and photos with the Easter Bunny on Sunday, April 10 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Memorial Field, 57th Street and Broadway.
The event, which will have rides, candy, games, and prizes, is open to all West New York residents.
UC Art Gallery’s April exhibit opens with reception April 14
Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack and the Board of Commissioners announce that Union City will host their April art exhibit at the Union City Art Gallery at City Hall with an opening reception on Thursday, April 14 at 6 p.m.
The opening night reception will feature an art exhibit by artist Victor Cuya. Union City Art Gallery curator, Amado Mora, and the Union City Artist Collective is organizing the event. The event will also feature live music. Refreshments will be served and admission is free.

NHCAC offers free oral cancer screenings this month
Free oral cancer screenings will be available in Union City this month as part of National Oral Cancer Awareness Month. The dental health care professionals of North Hudson Community Action Corporation (NHCAC) will provide the free screenings.
The Union City screenings will take place May 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 407 23rd Street.
“We are participating in this national effort to bring attention to oral cancers, which struck 37,000 Americans last year alone. An oral screening can help prevent mouth, throat, tonsil and tongue cancers,” said Christopher F. Irizarry, NHCAC president and chief executive officer.

CEUS offers ESL and spelling classes
CEUS announces its spring education classes that include English (ESL) classes and Spanish literacy classes for those that have problems reading and spelling in their own language.
English classes will take place on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Level 1b, on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for Level 1, on Sundays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for Level 2, and on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Level 3.
Conversation classes for alumni of levels 3 and 3 will be held on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Spelling classes for Levels 1 and 2 will be offered on Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Classes are offered to all interested.

NJMC to offer ‘Dancin’ with the Honeybees!’ program
NJMC will offer ‘Dancin’ with the Honeybees!’ program for ages 3 to 11 on Saturday, April 16 at 1 p.m at the Meadowlands Environment Center.
Cliff Wright-Sunflower is a master beekeeper, environmental educator, storyteller, and performer. In his audience participation program, “Dancin’ with the Honeybees,” he brings the scientific magic of the honeybee hive to life, with storytelling, poetry, prose, puppetry, music, and dance.
Cost is $5 per person and $4 for MEC members. Pre-registration is required.
