A funeral mass took place March 25 at St. Joseph’s Church, Jersey City, for Francis J. “Frank” Steinhauser, 88. He passed away surrounded by his family at his Jersey City home on March 21. Born in Jersey City, Frank served in the US Navy during World War II as a Fire Controlman, Third Class on the USS Pensacola. After his return, Frank continued protecting others, joining the Jersey City Police Department Emergency Squad and later the 6th Precinct, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. Frank is remembered in Sgt. Teddy Goral’s book, “Emergency Squad: 75 Years of Jersey City Police Emergency Service” as a pioneer of the Jersey City Bomb Squad, serving as one of Jersey City’s first Bomb Technicians. Frank was more than his job; the role he most was that of husband, father and grandfather.
He was married to the love of his life, Dolores Marie Steinhauser, for 64 years and delighted in time spent with his family. Frank was a member of the VFW Post 810, The Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 4, Knights of Columbus 137, The Emerald Society, JC Police Anchor Club, The Von Steuben Society, JC Police Pistol Team and Bowling Team. A communicant of St. Joseph’s Parish in Jersey City, Frank was a member of their senior group, an usher, helped at Bingo, volunteered at the annual festival and was a member of the Holy Name Society. An avid golfer, fisherman and true Yankees fan, he shared his passion for the Yankees with his grandchildren, bringing them to games as often as possible. After retiring from The JCPD in 1975, Frank worked as a vault officer at Morgan Guaranty Trust in New York City. Frank was predeceased by his wife Dolores Marie (Kelly) Steinhauser; his parents, Frank and Irene (Mack) Steinhauser; and sisters, Miriam Schmidt and Irene Steinhauser. He is survived by his children, Mary Page and her husband William, Dolores Marie Steinhauser, Frank Steinhauser, JCPD and his wife Marianne (Montagne), and Margaret Steinhauser; grandchildren, Jennifer, Marcus, Frank and his fiance’ Ashley Srolovitz; his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Kelly) Wirtz, Tom and Mary Kelly, and Madeline Kelly; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends too numerous to mention.
