Funeral mass was offered March 25 at Our Lady of Mercy Church for Nicholas D. Savino, 70. “Nick” was a lifelong Jersey City resident. He passed away March 20 surrounded by his family and friends at Bayonne Hospital. Nick was born in New York City. He graduated Snyder High School in Jersey City in 1958, and then went on to serve in the U.S. Army. He was married to Louise Ghiberti in 1964 and they went on to celebrate 47 years of marriage. After leaving the military, Nick continued to spend his life as a public servant for the residents of Jersey City. Nick was a dedicated Jersey City firefighter for 30 years at Engine 17, a bus driver for The Lutheran School and a courtesy van driver for Christ Hospital. In retirement, Nick helped raise his three grandchildren. While his daughter, Denise, worked and son-in-law, Wasyel, served two tours of duty in Iraq, Nick dedicated all of his time and energy to making sure his grandchildren were well taken care of. When Nick was not babysitting, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends at his home in Seaside Park. If he was not treasure hunting on the beach, you could find Nick at OTB or Atlantic City. In the last 14 months of his life, Nick fought lung cancer. As difficult as this time was, he was fortunate to have his wife Louise, daughters Janine and Denise, and a wonderful oncologist Dr. D. Iyengar at his side 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help fight this awful disease. His family and friends stayed by his side throughout this difficult time to ensure that Nick lived with hope and passed on to the next life with dignity. Nick is survived by his wife Louise; daughters Denise and Janine; son-in-law Wasyel and grandchildren, Nicole, Erika and Christopher; and brothers Frank and Daniel. Services arranged by the Greenville Memorial Home, Jersey City.
