The city of Bayonne was founded 150 years ago this Friday.
The city’s original founding as a township was on April 1, 1861, on the same day as the official start of the American Civil War. It was formed from portions of Bergen Township.
In 1869, as an act of the New Jersey Legislatures, it was reincorporated at a city, subject to a vote on March 19, 1869 in a township referendum.
