UNION CITY — The Union City man charged with murdering his girlfriend Sunday morning had his bail set at $300,000 cash after he made his first appearance in court this afternoon, and is being held in Hudson County Correctional Center in Kearny.
The 29-year-old man is believed to have strangled his 29-year-old girlfriend in their residence at 1315 Summit Ave. after a domestic argument ensued between the two, according to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio.
Union City police were called to the couple’s third floor apartment after neighbors heard a disturbance at around 7 a.m. They found the woman dead in her bed with a wooden crucifix laid on her chest, “the inference being that [the crucifix] was placed there by the [perpetrator],” DeFazio said.
Two children of the couple were also found at the scene, and are now in the care of a relative of the deceased.
