Judge overrules termination of ex-Hoboken SWAT cop Andriani; new hearings scheduled for May

HOBOKEN – Angelo Andriani, a former police officer who was terminated by the city following allegations of conduct unbecoming of an officer and acts of misconduct, will be the subject of a hearing in the Office of Administrative Law on May 6 and May 20, according to a letter from the office of Mayor Dawn Zimmer to the City Council.
Lt. Andriani was the face of the SWAT team scandal in 2007 after photos emerged of Andriani and other city employees partying, in uniform and sometimes with their guns, alongside Hooters waitresses in Louisiana and Alabama. Andriani was terminated, but the case was appealed to the Civil Service Commission and was transferred to the Office of Administrative Law, where the May hearings will be held.
“The city is confident that Mr. Andriani’s termination for this offense will be upheld,” according to a letter from Zimmer.
In 2010, Andriani was terminated as a result of allegedly misconduct in an airport in Tampa, Fla. After an appeal to the Civil Service Commission, a judge concluded that Andriani had engaged in conduct unbecoming of a police officer and violated departmental rules, but his termination was modified to a 90-day suspension. Then, in February, the Civil Service Commission increased the penalty to a six-month suspension with no back pay or attorney’s fees.
“The city is appealing the decision by the Civil Service Commission and is seeking to have his termination for this offense affirmed,” according to Zimmer.
