Man charged with killing wife gets psych testing
A Jersey City man, Narciso Gomera, 46, charged with stabbing his wife to death on March 12, has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation, according to NJ.com. The man was arrested at his home on Ocean Avenue near Sheffield Street. Bail was set at $300,000 in cash.
Detectives believe the man had been drinking and the killing occurred during an argument, according to the story. The couple’s 11-year-old daughter went to a neighbor’s apartment to call police. She will be cared for by an older sister.
Chimps’ best friend to be honored at Liberty Science Center
On Friday, April 8, Liberty Science Center will hold its Citizen Science Gala Benefit. Among the honorees will be Jane Goodall, the renowned chimpanzee expert, who will receive a Distinguished Humanitarian Award. The honor “is given in recognition of individuals whose stellar service to humanity through science and technology has dramatically advanced progress in the chosen field of endeavor with a profound depth of impact.”

Walk for open spaces
The Cross-Jersey Walking Challenge, a partnership between the long-distance running group Free Walkers and the East Coast Greenway Alliance, is a 100-mile walk from Trenton to New York City divided into three sections. On May 21, participants will walk 50 miles from Metropark through Newark and on to Liberty State Park in Jersey City before boarding a PATH train to Penn Station.

Jersey City is one of five N.J. cities to go to Harvard
The Center for Community Progress, a national organization, has a new initiative that brings together city officials from Orange, Irvington, Newark, Jersey City, and Millville to participate in a week-long session at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.
This national leadership institute focused on adaptive reuse and turning vacant properties into community assets. Following the session, which was held from March 15-18, Community Progress staff will visit each city to work with local governments to apply ideas from the institute.
Liberty Humane Society to hold drive and adoption specials
Liberty Humane Society, in conjunction with Hudson Cradle, will hold a supply drive until April 15. Since Hudson Cradle houses needy babies and Liberty Humane houses needy pets, both are asking for relevant supplies.
Hudson Cradle’s needs include baby wipes and garbage bags, while Liberty Humane’s needs include wet and dry kitten food and kitten milk replacer.
Supplies for either can be dropped off at Liberty Humane Society at 235 Jersey City Boulevard,and Hudson Cradle, at 1805 Kennedy Boulevard.
LHS is also offering adoption specials throughout March on all its teenaged cats.
Music program at Grace Church
On Friday, March 25 at 8 p.m., Con Vivo Music will present “Composer Talks: Lebit Beecher,” an evening of music and discussion. Beecher, a composer, will discuss his compositions in which recorded interviews, video, and live music interact. The program, which will feature a performance of his “Stories from my Grandmother,” will take place at Grace Church, 39 Erie Street, Jersey City.
