Hoboken grid legend Maguire dies

HOBOKEN — George Maguire, a member of both the Hudson County Sports and Hoboken/Demarest Halls of Fame, died Wednesday afternoon in his home in Bloomfield.
Maguire went from Demarest High School to the University of Oklahoma to play football. He then went back to Oklahoma in the early 1970s at the age of 44 to continue the football career he had abandoned to work to help his family in the 1950s, gaining national attention. Maguire was a fixture at Hoboken football games for the last 30 years, prominently standing on the sidelines as one of the Red Wings’ biggest supporters. He was a beloved member of the Hoboken grid family, embraced both by former coach Ed Stinson and current coach Lou Taglieri.
Funeral arrangements for Maguire will be held at O’Boyle’s Funeral Home, 307-309 Broad Street in Bloomfield Sunday between 2-6 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held Monday at 10 AM at St. Thomas R.C. Church.
