No independent overseer for Liberty Humane Society

JERSEY CITY AND HOBOKEN — On Tuesday, Superior Court Judge Thomas Olivieri denied the request of a group of former Liberty Humane Society volunteers who want an outside person to be appointed to manage the LHS animal shelter in Jersey City. The judge said the plaintiffs had not provided enough testimony from witnesses to show the need for an outside overseer, according to a story on nj.com.
The volunteers sued last year, accusing former and current shelter board members and employees of fiscal improprieties and euthanizing some animals unnecessarily. They are seeking to have someone oversee the shelter other than the present LHS board.
Olivieri also said that most of the charges were not in his jurisdiction and referred them to Hudson County Superior Court.
The shelter accepts and adopts out animals from both Jersey City and Hoboken.
