WNY physician surrenders medical license, will pay tens of thousands in restitution

WEST NEW YORK — A West New York physician has agreed to permanently surrender his medical license, and will pay nearly $40,000 in restitution fees to settle a complaint filed against him last October alleging incompetence and fraud, according to NJ.com.
The physician, who had a pain medicine and neurology practice in West New York, and also in Paramus, has agreed to pay, in restitution, $8,138.17 to patients’ insurance companies, $10,000 in civil penalties, and $19,327 for investigative and legal costs to the state under the terms of the settlement.
The administrative complaint filed against him alleged that he had performed unnecessary electrodiagnostic testing, committed incompetent performance and interpretation of such testing, billed for testing not performed, referred patients to his self-owned surgical facilities for invasive procedures without disclosure, made false statements to the board, and failed to maintain required continued medical education.
If the physician had not voluntarily surrendered his license, he would have been subjected to a disciplinary hearing before the state Board of Medical Examiners.
His license was revoked as of Jan. 31.
