Dear Editor:
I was disappointed to learn the City Council is considering discontinuation of the Corner Cars program. I see several major problems in Hoboken: (1) parking, (2) traffic, and (3) cars parked too close to crosswalks causing dangerous sight distance issues for pedestrians and vehicles. From what I’ve read, the Corner Cars program has been successful in the number of users who have signed up for the program, and others have even indicated Corner Cars are responsible for them choosing to give up their parking permit. I have to imagine this has taken more vehicles off the street than the 42 lost parking spaces. The fabric of Hoboken was built in an age before cars, and unfortunately it’s not everyone’s right to have a parking space. Then why are we treating these lost 42 spaces as if they are gold? Why not continue a program with the potential to remove cars from the street, which in turn has the potential to reduce parking demand and some traffic/sight distance issues?
We live in a very unique environment, and every effort should be made to come up with unique remedies and options for residents. If parking is that much of an issue, there is plenty of it in the suburbs!
