HOBOKEN AND BEYOND — It’s the excuse you always wished you could use, but apparently, James Roberts, Ph.D., is telling the truth. Roberts was recently profiled in the Times-Tribune of Scranton, Pa. because he’s studying bars and violence at bars.
The article notes: “…as a Ph.D. candidate at Rutgers University studying the Hoboken bar scene, a man thought Dr. Roberts was leering at his bartender girlfriend and tried to instigate a fight.”

More from the article: “Since joining Scranton’s faculty in 2005, Dr. Roberts has been featured in The New York Times and cited in a seminal book titled ‘Raising the Bar: Preventing Aggression in and Around Bars, Pubs and Clubs,’ written by Canadian social scientist Kathryn Graham and Australian criminologist Ross Homel. In the U.S., serious study of bars is only beginning to find a foothold, Dr. Roberts said.”
