HOBOKEN – Divers will soon inspect the entire waterfront in Hoboken.
At the City Council meeting Monday night, a $334,395 resolution was approved for an inspection of the waterfront piers and properties by divers and engineers from Boswell Engineering. City engineer Joseph Pomante said 21 days would be spent on an inspection of public property, which would cost $86,775, and a 53 day inspection of private property will total $247,620.
Pomante said the process is a “very slow, very tedious” process because the inspections are very “hands-on.” Inspections of Pier A Park have already begun. Pier A Park is built on concrete, rather than the troublesome wood pilings which contributed to the collapse of Sinatra Drive North in early October. However, the park is due for an inspection, according to Pomante.
The Sinatra Drive North collapse took place in the ward of Councilwoman Beth Mason. Mason called for the establishment of an ad-hoc subcommittee which would be updated regularly on the status of the inspections throughout the process. She asked for the formation of the subcommittee so the council can “inform [their] constituents on an immediate basis.”
