Guttenberg council members win in unopposed election

Council members Alfonso Caso and Donna Florio won in their unopposed elections for their council seats in Guttenberg on this week’s election held on Nov. 2.
The received 1,068 and 1,087 votes respectively.

Sires granted another term in 13th, Rothman wins in the 9th

On Nov.2, Albio Sires, the incumbent congressman for the 13th District, won another term in office.
Within just a couple of hours of the polls closing, Sires was reported as the winner in Hudson, Essex, Middlesex, and Union counties, achieving an average of over 75 percent of the vote between the four counties.
Sires, who has been in office since 2006, faced three challengers to maintain his seat in Congress this year, including Republican challenger Henrietta Dwyer, who earned an average of 21 percent of the vote. Third party challengers Anthony Zanowic and Maximo Gomez Nacer received 2 percent or less in each county.
The 13th Congressional District covers four counties, including a majority of Hudson County municipalities like Guttenberg, Hoboken, Union City, Weehawken, and West New York, as well as parts of Bayonne, Jersey City, and North Bergen.
Rep. Steven Rothman in the 9th District defeated Republican challenger Michael Agosta, receiving 11,554 votes to Agosta’s 5,271 votes in Hudson County.

Burlington Coat Factory opening in North Bergen

On Nov. 12 a Burlington Coat Factory store will open at the Tonnelle Plaza Shopping Center owned by Hartz Mountain Industries.
The new store will be the first in North Bergen and the 26th in New Jersey. It will also serve as Tonnelle Plaza’s anchor store, located at 8101 Tonnelle Avenue. Shopping hours will Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from Noon to 5 p.m.
The store is located in North Bergen’s Urban Enterprise Zone, which enables them to charge only 3.5 percent in sales tax.
Burlington is expecting to employ approximately 75 area residents in sales and management positions and said that shoppers will be able to save up to 70 percent from department store prices.
“The new Burlington will appeal not only to local shoppers by providing a unique shopping experience for the entire family, but the local community will also benefit,” says Thomas Kingsbury, President and CEO of Burlington Coat Factory. “We are thrilled to bring jobs to North Bergen with the opening of this new store.”

North Bergen Library hosts $20 ESL class

The North Bergen Free Public Library is hosting a free 12-week English for Beginners program for Spanish speakers.
Instructor Elke Bachik, a professional translator with interpreters’ diploma in English, French, and German. She is currently a professional translator for the Federal Court in Newark.
All students must have a genuine desire and strong motivation to learn English. Attendance and completion of homework is mandatory.
There is a $20 fee for dictionaries, notebooks, and flashcards.
Students must be able to spend at least 30 minutes per day writing simple English phrases that are covered in class.

Auditions for Park Players production

The Park Players will host auditions for their upcoming production of “Godspell” at the Church of the Good Shepherd, located at 1576 Palisade Ave, Fort Lee, on Nov. 8 and 10 from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
The show will be performed on Feb. 25, 26, 27 and March 4, 5, and 6 in 2011.
Those auditioning should be prepared to sign and move, and if possible sing a song from the show. An accompanist will be provided.

High Tech H.S. students debate

According to Dr. Joseph Giammarella, the director of High Tech High School, members of the school’s Junior States of America (JSA) attended the New Jersey Region Fall Regional Convention held in Princeton last month.
The students included Louis Guerra, Halimah Elmariah, and Virgina Lee of North Bergen, Ricardo Rojas of Union City, Leora Rosenberg (the co-president of their JSA) and Ben Lenz (representative in the JSA Mid-Atlantic State Assembly, both of Hoboken, Riham Ali of Jersey City (co-president of JSA), and Secaucus resident Aayushi Khanchandani.
Lenz won two best speaker awards while Ali won best moderator. Rojas won one debate as well.
Guerra, the New Jersey Regional Chief of Staff, helped run and plan the convention.

Flea market at St. Rocco’s Church

St. Rocco’s Church will hold an indoor flea market on Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the parish social center, located at 42nd Street and Kennedy Boulevard.

Harvest Beer Festival in NB

The Steinauer Club is sponsoring their annual Harvest Beer Festival at the Schuetzen Park Crystal Ball Room, located on Kennedy Boulevard and 32nd Street, on Nov. 20 at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7 p.m.
Admission will be $45 per person, which will include a Bavarian platter with sauerkraut, warm potato salad, coffee, tea, decaf, and butter cake. Beer, wine and soda will also be served for four hours.
Entertainment will include music by Bud and Linda Gramer, as well as D’Heimat’s Gruppe Schuhplattler’s dance ensemble.
