UNION CITY AND BEYOND – At the Union City Board of Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, the Monastery of the Perpetual Rosary (also known as the Blue Chapel) was designated as a historic site by a resolution passed by the board.
Commissioner Lucio Fernandez said that the municipal designation is just one step in the ongoing effort by the city to protect the historic building, which is still maintained as private property. The city’s Historic Preservation Advisory Committee is continuing to pursue the next steps in the preservation process.
Because of its historical relevance for both Union City and others far beyond city limits, earlier this year the site was included on the 2010 “10 Most Endangered Historic Sites” released by Preservation New Jersey.
