Funeral services were held Oct. 20 for Jessie Mae Smith of Jersey City. She died Oct. 16. In 1962, she was the first African American female to work as a teller with the Hudson City Savings Bank in Jersey City, later progressing to branch manager, and retiring in 1999 as the assistant vice president of the bank. She also cofounded the Madison Avenue Block Association (MABA), serving as the secretary for the MABA and, later, as the business manager. She was the daughter of the late Jesse and Nevada Moye; the wife of Thaddeus Smith; the mother of Gregory; the sister of Barbara Twine and husband Curtis, Ruth Hill and husband Harold, Emma Lawrence and husband Jerry, Maxine Moye, Robert Moye and wife Gwen, and Joseph Moye and wife Patricia, and the late Catherine Johnson and Dorothy Drew; the sister-in-law of Elight Johnson and Inez Jackson; and an aunt, relative, and friend to many more.
