NHCAC health van to make a stop in Weehawken

The North Hudson Community Health Van will be visiting Weehawken on Oct. 5 to perform free cholesterol, diabetes, and blood pressure screenings. Anyone interested should visit 2-4 Potter Place from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 525 Gregory Ave. from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. For more information, call the Senior Center at (201) 319-6060.

Learn how to dance with Weehawken’s ‘stars’

A 10-week ballroom dancing instruction program will be offered on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 6 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Senior/Nutrition Center, 203 Highwood Ave. Classes will be taught by James Festa. All ages are welcome, but the program is open to Weehawken residents only. Proof of residency is required. Friday afternoon book club continues

Weehawken Library’s “Friday Afternoon Book Club” continues this fall. The group meets once a month on the second Friday of each month from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The next meeting will be on Oct. 8 for a discussion of “The Lost City of Oz” by Davis Grann. New members are welcome.

Library to hold a book sale

The Weehawken Library will host its annual book sale from Oct. 3 through Oct. 9 – purchase a bag at the Library for just $1 and fill it with books. For more information, contact the library at (201) 863-7823.

Halloween party for seniors is set

All Weehawken senior citizens are invited to the town’s Annual Halloween Party. This year the event will take place on Oct. 30 at noon at the Weehawken Elk’s Club, 50th Street and Boulevard East, with an afternoon of fun, music, and food. HC residents invited to ‘Birding for Beginners’

On two different days in October, the Bergen County Audubon Society and Teaneck Creek Conservancy will present a course in bird watching. Hudson County residents are encouraged to attend and discover how to identify birds, find out which optics are the best to use for birding, and learn how to use a field guide.
The course will be held on Oct. 5 and also on Oct. 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Teaneck Creek Conservancy, 20 Puffin Way in Teaneck. The course is free for everyone. For more information contact Don Torino at (201) 636-4022 or email greatauk4@aol.com.

PMC releases schedule of upcoming free health screenings

During the month of October, Palisades Medical Center will once again be offering free screenings including blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, heart rate, body mass index/BMI, peak flow, and pulse oximetery.
The following is a schedule of the free health screenings that will be held in local communities over the next few weeks:
• Oct. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Holy Family Church, 530 35th St. in Union City
• Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Assembly of God Church, 51st and Kennedy Blvd. in North Bergen
• Oct. 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Joseph/St. Michael Church, 1314 Central Ave. in Union City
• Oct. 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Anthony Church, 615 8th St. in Union City.

NAMI offers free course for caregivers of children with mental illness

Starting Oct. 9, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Hudson County will offer a free, six week-session course called NAMI Basics, for parents and other primary caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness.
NAMI is dedicated to improving the quality of life for both those who suffer with brain disorders and mental illness and those who are caregivers, by offering hope, awareness, and coping skills through education and family support.
Registration for the free course is necessary. Classes include ADHD, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder Anxiety Disorders, handling challenging behavior, etc. Classes will take place in Jersey City. Childcare will be provided.
