To the Editor:
Why is the Port Authority depriving the people of Bayonne from enjoying our Teardrop Memorial donated by Russia? The City of Bayonne should have spared that small parcel of land and not let it be included in the sale of the land. I know I myself drive down there to just sit and enjoy the New York skyline and the cool breezes. There isn’t a place in Bayonne that could boast of how clean and well-kept that small area was.
How come the Statue of Liberty, donated by France to this country, was never moved? The City and the Port Authority should think about removing this memorial since there were people in this town and also workers from Port Authority who lost their lives in the Twin Towers. I think it would be disrespectful to their memory to remove this memorial. Is nothing sacred?
I can’t believe that the people in this city aren’t up in arms regarding this. There was talk about finding another location for this memorial. When and if we find another parcel of land, how long will it be before we’re told we have to move it again because that piece of land was also sold? I have a paver at the memorial for my husband who was a Korean Vet, so I feel a connection to that site.
I guess once you hit 80 years old you get bitter and disillusioned. I was born in this town and I want to die here, but I see more and more empty stores and lots for sale and I think to myself, is this going to end up as a ghost town? Money seems to be topmost on everyone’s mind, but just remember one thing, you can’t take your money with you!
