HOBOKEN — The Jersey City Emergency Services Unit and Hoboken Police Department converged on 720 Monroe St., the Monroe Center, early Friday afternoon after an apparent eviction turned ugly. No one was arrested or charged at the scene.
After the incident police said that it was a “regular police call.” They would not comment further.
The woman being evicted, Nina Akai, of Leonia, said she does store seven guns in her art studio and said the guns are registered in Hoboken, where she used to live. She described herself as a big fan of trap shooting. According to Akai, she began work at the Monroe Center 20 years ago.
“Police got involved because of a fictitious phone call that said I had guns and was making threats,” Akai said.
A call to Josh Krantz, property manager, was not immediately returned.
Craig Dale is an artist at the studio, and is the president of the Friends of the Monroe Center, and said starting tonight there will be hired security to monitor the premises.
According to Dale, he heard police radios in the hallway and when he went outside, police told him there were guns involved and to stay in his studio.
“I didn’t know she had weapons,” Dale said. “But there is never a time I feel unsafe here [at the Monroe Center].”- Ray Smith
