Organization hosts walkathon for the American Cancer Society

A local group of Hindu residents raised funds for the American Cancer Society last weekend by holding their 16th annual walkathon in North Bergen.
The group had not yet tallied how much money was raised, but said that last year they were able to collect $3,000.
On Sept. 5 more than 250 BAPS Charities volunteers, members of an international social and spiritual Hindu organization of the Swami Narayan group, participated in the walk, which started at North Bergen Town Hall’s parking lot and proceeded north on Kennedy Boulevard to Walgreens before turning back. The group has a center located at 2000 Tonnelle Ave. in North Bergen.

Every year, they choose a beneficiary for their fund-raising theme, “Building a Better Community, One Step at a Time.” For the last two years BAPS has chosen the American Cancer Society, while in years past they have donated to the Special Young People of North Bergen, along with other non-for-profits.
“We are honored to walk for such a noble cause that will directly support the community that we call home,” said Anil Patel, coordinator of BAPS Mandir in North Bergen. “This is a unique opportunity BAPS Charities has to bring together old and young to serve the community. We’re humbled by the energy of all the volunteers that have come out to make today a tremendous success.”
One North Bergen resident and attendee, Payal Patel, said that it was important for people to have an “active voice” in their community.
“Millions of people, including some of our beloved, suffer from this disease,” he said. “At events such as these, we can show how much we care.”
