JERSEY CITY AND HOBOKEN — The Liberty Humane Society, which runs Jersey City’s animal shelter and also has a contract to deal with stray animals in Hoboken, is holding its monthly board meeting Tuesday, 7 p.m. at City Hall, 280 Grove St., in the 3rd floor conference room.
The meeting usually covers shelter business, but with recent problems at the shelter, there may be fireworks.
One source said she will press the board to discuss the shelter’s policy of putting animals to sleep in order to free up space.
The shelter’s euthanasia policies have come to the fore in recent weeks starting in mid-July when the previous board had a disagreement with the shelter’s management over that issue.
The shelter was founded by volunteers and is located near Liberty State Park. It had to take in additional animals last year when the SPCA shelter closed permanently due to health violations.
The five-member board all ended up resigning at a July 14 board meeting, saying they could no longer work with shelter management. An interim board in place includes three former Liberty Humane board presidents.
A few days before the July 14 meeting, the shelter’s executive director was fired.
