Zimmer deserves praise for municipal garage solution

Dear Editor:
I’d like to commend Mayor Dawn Zimmer for her leadership in guiding Hoboken to the best possible scenario in regards to the relocation of the municipal garage. With Weehawken and Hoboken agreeing to share garage services without affecting any residential areas in Hoboken, we should be thankful that Mayor Zimmer and her team played a steady hand until the very last minute and evaluated all options carefully and thoughtfully.
The issue of the municipal garage relocation was brought about by poor management by past administrations, which opted instead for short term fixes without considering future ramifications. Thankfully, Mayor Zimmer and her administration are turning the corner from the days of fiscal mismanagement and incompetence to enacting long term solutions that will benefit Hoboken for years to come.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for certain council members who were determined to use scare tactics and purposely mislead the public into thinking the Municipal Garage would be placed in certain residential neighborhoods. Did anyone honestly believe that Mayor Zimmer’s first priority in relocating the garage was placing it smack in the middle of residential Hoboken? Of course not. In deliberating any major improvements or ordinances, common sense dictates that all options should be put on the table and the pros and cons of each evaluated. Unfortunately, certain council members took advantage of the process to scare the public and score cheap political points.
We should be thankful that we have a Mayor who does not reduce herself to the petty behavior of some of her political opponents and instead takes the high ground while working to make Hoboken an even better place to live. With the successful negotiations of shared services of the municipal garage with Weehawken serving as the latest example, we finally have a Mayor in Dawn Zimmer who is moving Hoboken in the right direction, one step at a time.

Sincerely,
Vijay Chaudhuri
